Free Deck & Stair Check on the Outer Banks

Salt air, sun and a summer of guests wear on decks and stairs in ways that are easy to miss, especially from out of town. Our team looks over the stairs, railings, framing and fasteners, then walks you through anything that needs attention, with photos if you'd like.

Free Deck & Stair Check, photos sent to you, so you can plan winter work.

Two nor'easters hit the Outer Banks this fall. A loose railing or a soft stair tread is easy to miss from out of town. Our team looks it over and walks you through what needs attention, if anything.

We'll also look at your siding and windows while we're there.

Timing

When should you book a check?

  • A guest or your property manager says a railing feels loose or a step feels soft.
  • You see rust stains, popped screws or nails, or gray, splitting boards.
  • The stairs bounce, lean or pull away from the deck.
  • A big storm or nor'easter just passed through.
  • You're getting the house ready for the rental season, or you just bought it.

The check

What our team looks at

  • Stairs: stringers, treads, landings and how the stairs attach to the deck.
  • Railings: posts, top rails and balusters, and whether they move under pressure.
  • Framing: joists, beams, posts and the ledger where the deck meets the house.
  • Fasteners & hardware: rust and corrosion from salt air, loose connectors, and nails or screws backing out.
  • Boards: soft spots, splits, cupping, and spacing that traps sand and water.

Off-island owners

For rental owners and owners who live out of town

You don't have to be on the island. We'll set up a time that works for you or your property manager, and we can share what we find by call, text or email. Catching a loose railing or a worn tread before a guest does is better for everyone.

Honest advice

Repair or replace?

Most decks don't need to be torn out. If the framing is solid, replacing boards, stairs or railings is often enough. If the framing isn't sound, we'll explain why, so you can decide with confidence.
